Does anybody know if there's a tool in ArcGIS for finding out how far a river valley will be flooded if it is dammed and filled as a reservoir? I have the DEM, the reservoir capacity and I know where I want to put the dam. Thanks

I seem to recall you being able to do this using the Viewshed Analysis Tool as part of the Spatial Analyst extension in ArcGIS. Check it out here...I could be way off but I think this will get you going in the right direction!

1st - welcome to the forum

2nd - Check out this thread for some pointers - not exactly what you are asking, but some of the suggestions might help.

Post back if that doesn't help.

If you can't find something in ArcGIS, GlobalMapper can do that.  You can get a visual of the inundation, and even create a shapefile of the limits.
